Engineering Spotlight: Alastair Kane

Tell me a bit about your role within the Digital Displacement team?

I’m a production software test engineer with the DD team which involves testing the application software on the controller to ensure it meets the requirements. Each iteration of the software enables more features that our customers can use, and we must make sure these are functioning correctly. Customers can request that their controller is preconfigured in a specific way and we have to make the configuration file and ensure it works the way the customer expects. 

 How did you get into engineering? 

 I’ve had an interest in engineering in one form or another from a young age. As a child, I would take toys apart to see how they worked and then put them back together again so it was only natural I would end up in this industry. I studied electrical engineering at Edinburgh University where I realised how powerful software was and how many different applications it can be used in.

How did you fall into the role you are in now?

I joined the team in 2019. I was in another role at the time, but when I found out about DD, I was really interested in making the move. 
Innovative hydraulic technologies don’t come along that often and the opportunity to get involved with DD in the early stages was too good to miss.   

 What do you find the most interesting thing about Digital Displacement? 

From my perspective, the thing I find most interesting is the level of customisation available. The customer can set up the pump exactly how they want it, to meet their individual needs through software, so the same hardware can be used in a multitude of different applications. Another interesting aspect is the data that gets fed back to the operator, the controller reports what it is doing in real-time as well as reporting its status, which allows any faults to be diagnosed quickly. 

What would you say to someone considering using Digital Displacement pumps within their technology/machinery? 

 I would tell them to approach the technology with an open mind. The technology is quite a big departure from current industrial standards, but with the global focus on reducing emissions, the efficiency gains that can be achieved by using DD are very persuasive. 

 What stream/focus of engineering do you see yourself being involved with in the future? 

 I see myself staying in software for the foreseeable future. I’m excited by the future of DD and what it has to offer. I want to be part of the DD journey, bringing new software features to our customers and products to market.
